When one lane has to carry both directions through a long work zone, somebody has to lead. Our pilot trucks guide each platoon of traffic through at controlled speed, synchronized by radio with flaggers at both ends.

What it is

Understanding pilot car operations

A pilot car operation uses a marked vehicle with a 'PILOT CAR — FOLLOW ME' sign to lead queues of traffic through a one-lane, two-way segment — typically when the segment is too long, too curved, or too complex for drivers to navigate on flagger signals alone. The pilot vehicle controls speed and spacing, prevents head-on conflicts, and keeps traffic clear of workers and equipment along the route.

It's a coordination exercise: flaggers meter traffic at each end, the pilot driver leads each direction alternately, and everyone stays synchronized by radio. We ran exactly this in a multi-phase operation that combined two closed travel lanes, a roadway crossing, message boards, and pilot trucks — planning, equipment, crews, and field supervision all under one coordinator.

When does a work zone need a pilot car instead of just flaggers?
When drivers can't safely self-navigate the one-lane segment: long lengths, sight-distance limits, night operations, or complex internal routing. Many jurisdictions also require a pilot vehicle above certain segment lengths in their standards or in the approved TCP.
How much delay does a pilot car operation add?
Cycle time is driven by segment length and speed. We engineer platoon sizes and cycle times to keep typical waits within the range road authorities accept, and message boards upstream tell drivers what to expect.
Do your pilot operations include the flaggers?
